西方雕塑发展的历程中出现过三个高峰：古希腊、罗马是**个高峰，雄居峰巅的是菲狄亚斯；意大利文艺复兴是个高峰，雄居峰巅的是米开朗基罗；第三个高峰是19世纪的法国，雄居峰巅的巨匠是罗丹。菲狄亚斯、米开朗基罗和罗丹所创造的艺术，是人类智慧的结晶，体现了古典文明的**成就。

罗丹为传统雕塑艺术划了一个句号。此后西方雕塑进入一个新的时代——现代雕塑时代。所谓“现代雕塑艺术”，是指罗丹、马约尔等之后的西方雕塑艺术，雕塑家们企图摆脱古典雕塑的束缚，追求新观念和新价值，并采用新的表现形式，这种艺术流派，统称现代派。现代派的艺术家们远离理性，接近感性，不再模仿自然，开始“脱离自然”，“安排自然”，“表现自然”，“解剖自然”，“感受自然”，把自己融化到自然中去。

总的说来，现代派艺术家重感性和主观内在的精神表现，用感觉代替观察，运用综合、抽象和半抽象代替具象，不再表现客观存在的形，而努力追求发掘自我心灵的形，否定艺术的功利性，认为艺术只是有意味的形式。现代艺术是传统艺术发展的必然，也是现代社会在艺术家精神上反映的产物综观20世纪西方美术创作的基本倾向，出现了表现、抽象和象征三种趋势。在这类艺术家中较为突出的是布朗库西，他对于现代雕刻的影响犹如马蒂斯和毕加索对现代绘画的影响一样。
